When you think of Andratx, you probably think of the super-rich. But this image is more fitting for the port of Port d’Andratx, which impresses with its numerous high-end restaurants, its fjord-like bay, and the luxurious boats in the marina.
In Andratx, life unfolds at a slightly slower pace. As you stroll through its narrow streets and soak in the relaxed atmosphere, it almost feels as if time stands still. At least, that’s how I feel sometimes.
Even so, Andratx also boasts first-class infrastructure, allowing for a good quality of life in the area. There is not only a variety of bars and restaurants but also an excellent cultural offering. I am always amazed by the variety this small town offers.
The municipality of Andratx offers something for everyone. You can explore the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana, enjoy the dreamy beaches, or choose between high society living and village life. It’s no wonder that the region is especially popular among tourists and German residents.

The origins of Andratx date back a long time. The Romans settled here in the 2nd century BC and called the area Andrachium.
In the Middle Ages, Andratx became an important place on the island. People built their homes inland to protect themselves from pirate attacks. For this reason, 14 watchtowers were constructed in the 16th century, 12 of which have survived to this day. The narrow cobblestone streets of the old town complete the picture.
Saint Catherine Tomàs
Saint Catalina Tomàs, the saint from the nearby mountain village of Valldemossa, is especially venerated in Andratx. It is said that in the 16th century, she saved the city from a pirate invasion by warning the inhabitants based on a vision, allowing them to defend themselves in time.

Son Mas Castle is an impressive 16th-century castle. It is one of the historical jewels of Andratx. Originally built as a fortified noble residence, the building has served as the town hall since 1998.
The picturesque garden surrounding it invites relaxation. From there, you can also enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Port d’Andratx and the sea.
Church of Santa Maria d’Andratx (Iglesia De Santa Maria)
The 13th-century Gothic church impresses with its architecture, its imposing bell tower, and its historical charm. Inside, visitors can admire ornate altars and stunning stained glass windows that filter sunlight into colorful patterns.
The climb to the church is quite steep. However, once there, you are greeted by an overwhelming view that stretches beyond Puerto de Andratx.
The religious service is held on Saturdays at 7:00 PM and on Sundays at 11:00 AM. During the months of July and August, the Sunday service is moved two hours earlier due to the summer heat. The services are conducted in Catalan.
Andratx Cultural Center (CCA)
The Andratx Cultural Center (CCA Andratx) is an absolute highlight for art lovers. Founded in 2001, this art museum is one of the largest centers for contemporary art in Europe and hosts numerous exhibitions.
Artists come from all over the world: even Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s widow, has exhibited here. After a stroll through the gallery, you can sit in the house’s café. The terrace also offers a magnificent view.
The windmill Sa Planeta
The windmill “Molí de sa Planeta” is one of the approximately 30 restored windmills across the island of Mallorca. It is located in the highest part of the old town, forming part of a group of three flour mills.
It was built in the 18th century and was used to process grains and produce flour for the population. Today, it is one of the city’s most popular attractions.
Old Town of Pantaleu
A highlight of Andratx is the old town of Pantaleu. The traditional houses and narrow streets invite a leisurely stroll. There, you can discover well-preserved architecture and charming squares.
There are small shops, cozy cafés, and restaurants with local Mallorcan specialties. A particularly rewarding visit is during the Sant Pere festival at the end of June in honor of Saint Peter. Numerous events are held in the old town.
Andratx weekly market
The weekly market in Andratx is held every Wednesday from 8 AM to 2 PM in the city center. Local vendors offer a wide range of fresh food, clothing, jewelry, and household items.
At the market, you can find fruits and vegetables of excellent quality, most of which come from the region. Despite the crowds wandering the streets, the atmosphere is very pleasant and friendly.
The market attracts not only local residents but also numerous tourists. This has led to a partial decline in the quality of the products in recent years, as many stalls now also offer mass-produced souvenirs at high prices.
Despite these changes, the weekly market in Andratx remains an authentic experience that, in my opinion, is worth a visit.

Popular hiking trails
Located in the west of Mallorca, the municipality of Andratx invites you to enjoy beautiful hikes.
The Route of the Towers leads to several 16th-century defensive towers in Andratx and Puerto de Andratx. It starts at the Tower of Sant Carles and ends at the Tower of sa Mola, the largest and best preserved. The route is approximately 10 km long, takes about 4 hours, and offers stunning views of the sea and surrounding peaks.
The first stage of the popular long-distance hiking trail GR 221 starts nearby and goes from Port d’Andratx to Sant Elm. It is 7.5 kilometers long and it is recommended to plan for around 2.5 hours. If you wish, you can continue from Sant Elm to La Trapa. Another 1.5 hours should be planned.
A challenging hike is the Sa Coma Freda route. This impressive circuit, which leads from the Galatzó estate through a cobblestone path and pine forests to the Puig de Galatzó at 1,026 m, takes about 4-5 hours in total. It offers spectacular views of the mountainous landscape and the coast of Mallorca. You shouldn’t miss a visit to the small Sa Coma Freda cave along the way. It’s worth it.
Visit to Port d’Andratx
The nearby Port d’Andratx, 5 km away, is known for its wealthy residents, who live there or spend their summer vacations. Only the fishing port is a reminder that it was once a quiet fishing village. Nowadays, superyachts line the yacht club.
For many, the marina with over 400 berths is the most beautiful and elegant port in Mallorca. Tourists can stroll along the stylish waterfront, admire the boats and yachts, and enjoy the cozy cafes and bars near the port.
Additionally, there are excellent shopping options here. The prices are generally a bit higher than in other parts of Mallorca. But those who come to Andratx can usually afford it.
Beach day and lunch in Sant Elm
An excursion from Andratx to Sant Elm offers the perfect combination of relaxation and enjoyment. Start the day at the beautiful sandy beach of Sant Elm, where you can swim in crystal-clear waters.
After a few hours of sun and sea, the boardwalk with its charming restaurants invites you to enjoy a delicious meal. The fresh fish dishes, for which the local cuisine is so famous, are particularly recommended. Is there anything better?
Excursion to the island of Sa Dragonera
The uninhabited island “Sa Dragonera” is a protected natural park that offers various trails and rich wildlife. The numerous black lizards on the island can be found on every corner. Boats to Sa Dragonera leave regularly from Sant Elm.
Visit to La Trapa monastery
Between Sant Elm and Estellencs lies the old monastery of La Trapa. The surrounding estate, over 80 hectares, belongs to a nature conservation organization in Mallorca.
The hike along the cliffs, which leads from Sant Elm to La Trapa, rewards with a magnificent view of the island of Sa Dragonera and the sea.
Visits to wineries with wine tasting
As a wine lover, I recommend visiting the local wineries in the region. On a guided tour of the vineyards, you’ll learn more about traditional production and get to know the local wines and grapes.
Bodega Terra IóN is perfect for a visit. Normally, there’s no need to make a reservation. They welcomed me kindly without prior notice.
I have very fond memories of the “Wine House” store. Not only does it offer delicious wines, but it also provides an emergency phone number in case you can’t make it during opening hours. I find that very charming! Interestingly, someone wrote the word “Amy” on the store’s sign: that’s Mallorcan humor.
Note:
Some tourists still ask about the Santa Catarina winery north of Andratx. It closed a few years ago because the lease expired.
Golf in Camp de Mar
For golfers, the nearby “Golf de Andratx” course in Camp de Mar offers challenging holes in a stunning setting. Hole six is nicknamed “Green Monster,” stretches 600 meters long, and is played almost entirely uphill.

Bar Cubano
I really liked the Cuban Bar, located beneath the church of Santa María. I recommend the tapas and the delicious Pa Amb Oli. The prices are fair, and the service is friendly.
Sa Societat
Sa Societat ofrece excelente cocina mallorquina con un menú variado, incluyendo platos internacionales. Es popular, así que se recomienda reservar.
Mesón Can Paco
Mesón Can Paco has a beautiful terrace with a wonderful view of the surrounding nature. It’s a bit out of the center, towards the CCA Andratx. The menu offers excellent Mallorcan and Mediterranean regional dishes.
Living in Andratx
In Andratx, you can experience authentic Mallorcan life up close. I love strolling through the weekly market and discovering fresh regional products. You’ll find everything there, from fresh vegetables to aromatic herbs.
Agriculture plays an important role in Andratx. Everywhere you see fruit trees and vineyards. The view of the numerous almond trees, which bloom beautifully in the spring, is especially lovely. Carob trees, fig trees, and citrus fruits are also cultivated.
Celebrations are an important part of the culture. My favorite festival is Sant Pere in June. The whole town celebrates with music, dancing, and delicious specialties. It’s simply beautiful to see how all the residents come together and have fun.
The international community in the municipality of Andratx is steadily growing, as many foreigners appreciate the peaceful yet well-connected location. Although Andratx has a village atmosphere with its siesta still observed, amenities like fiber optic internet are a reality. The luxurious Port d’Andratx and exclusive residential neighborhoods attract wealthy residents.

Fira d’Andratx
The “Fira d’Andratx” is a large spring market held annually at the end of April or the beginning of April. For two days, you can enjoy pure Mallorcan culture, with artisans and farmers showcasing their products. There are also agricultural equipment displays, and it’s not as boring as it sounds!
Festival of Sant Pere
The festival of Sant Pere in Andratx is celebrated in honor of Saint Peter. Each year at the end of June, Andratx becomes a hub filled with activities and celebrations. The festival includes religious ceremonies, colorful parades, traditional dances, and concerts.
Nits a la Fresca
The “Nits a la Fresca” (Nights in the Fresh Air) is a delightful cultural program that has been held in Andratx for over 20 years, enchanting both residents and visitors. The summer festival offers free cultural and musical events outdoors in various locations throughout the municipality, such as squares, gardens, and lighthouses.
With concerts, performances, and screenings, various musical, theatrical, and cultural styles are showcased. The program takes place annually in July and August at night and is organized by the city council.
Fest Mare de Déu dels Àngels
The “Mare de Déu dels Àngels” festival, also known as “Ses Madones,” is celebrated every year at the beginning of August and commemorates an event from 1578, when the women of Andratx defended the town from Ottoman pirates.
