Explore Artà in the northeast of Mallorca

By Richard Hanke, updated on

Artà is a charming little town in the northeast of Mallorca. Surrounded by the picturesque landscape of the Sierra de Llevant, a mountain range in the east of Mallorca, Artà offers a unique blend of historical sites, traditional crafts, and unspoiled nature.

The city is known for its impressive Sant Salvador fortress, which overlooks the city from above, as well as its winding alleys, where artist workshops and boutiques can be found.

Far from mass tourism, Artà invites visitors to immerse themselves in a tranquil and creative atmosphere. Whether walking through the surrounding nature, exploring archaeological sites, or enjoying the local gastronomy, Artà offers an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

Map and Location

The small town of Artà is about 60 kilometers from Palma de Mallorca. By car, it takes a little over an hour from Palma.

Although the historic town is located inland on the island, the municipality of Artà has a coastline totaling approximately 25 kilometers. Fortunately, this has so far been protected from excessive construction.

Half of the municipal area is dominated by the Massís d’Artà, which is the highest massif of the eastern mountain ranges in the Llevant region.

About Artà

Artà is the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name. It is especially known for its imposing fortress, spectacular caves, and vast largely uninhabited landscapes.

Those interested in traditional crafts should visit the beautiful ceramics and hand-woven baskets available in the many local shops.

At the beginning of 2022, about 8,000 people lived in Artà. In 2006, the proportion of foreigners in the population was 13.2 percent. Many Germans have also settled in this small town, often falling in love with it during their vacations. The tranquility, the often unspoiled nature, and the historic charm are a balm for many people. This aspect alone makes Artà one of the most beautiful tourist destinations on the Balearic island.

Eight mountains are part of the Artà municipality, with the highest being Puig Morei at 561 meters. In the rocky crevices of Cap de Ferrutx, peregrine falcons and ospreys find refuge, and on the solitary northern coast, many wild goats live.

History & Culture of Artà

The first mention of Artà dates back to the year 1232 and can be found in the Llibre de repartiment de Mallorca (Jaume I). The original document is located in the archives of Mallorca.

Initially, the place was named Yartân, which later became Jartan or Jertan. It is believed that these terms derive from “Gertan,” the Arabic name for garden.

Not much is known about the past of Artà, but it is believed that the fortress was built before the conquest by Islamic-Arab cultures. Starting from the 16th century, Artà grew, and the population increased considerably. However, in 1820, a terrible epidemic of bubonic plague wiped out more than 1,000 people.

In the 19th century, the territory was mostly in the hands of large landowners. However, families of small farmers needed extra income, so they began weaving baskets with palm leaves. Around the same time, the municipalities of Capdepera and Son Servera were separated from Artà. In 1880, Colonia de Sant Pere was founded on the coast as an agricultural colony.

Places of Interest in Artà and surroundings

Almudaina of Artà

The Almudaina of Artà is one of the most impressive witnesses of the past. The ancient fortress is very well preserved and dates back to the Islamic-Arab or Moorish era.

The tranquility there is incredible, and you can take excellent photos from the ancient walls. Inside the castle complex is the pilgrimage church of Santuari de Sant Salvador.

Sant Salvador Sanctuary

The impressive pilgrimage church Santuari de Sant Salvador is situated on a hill above Artà and dates back to the 14th century. A signposted path through the pedestrian zone leads upwards.

Good to know: to reach the pilgrimage church, you have to conquer a total of 180 steps. The ascent is rewarded with a fantastic view of the coast, the mountainous landscape, the olive and almond groves, as well as the fortified Transfiguració del Senyor church.

The Transfiguració del Senyor church

The parish church Transfiguration of the Lord is located near the town hall. With its tall buttresses, it appears quite imposing from the valley side. The interior mainly features a main altar dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ and a typically Mallorcan wooden pulpit.

Ses Païsses talayotic settlement

The Talayotic village of Ses Païsses stretches along the southeastern edge of Artà. It is a settlement from the prehistoric Talayotic culture. It was declared a historic-artistic monument by the Spanish State in 1946 and is one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites in Mallorca.

Coves of Artà

On the east coast of Mallorca, not far from Artà, lies a mysterious system of stalactite caves. It is east of Canyamel, in the municipality of Capdepera. These caves were once inhabited…

Inscriptions from the 16th and 17th centuries were found, and since 1869 there has been a guestbook where one can leave their signature during a visit. As part of a guided tour, one can explore the rooms and galleries with fascinating stalagmites and stalactites.

Beaches and Tourist Destinations

The most beautiful beaches near Artà

Along the east coast of Mallorca, there are numerous beautiful beaches.

Cala Mitjana

In the midst of an untouched mountainous landscape lies the picturesque cove Cala Mitjana. It is known for its tranquility and can be accessed on foot, by car, or by boat. However, at times the waves can be quite strong.

Cala Mesquida

Cala Mesquida features a beautiful white sand beach and is well-equipped for tourists. The water has a shallow entry. Many bird species inhabit the adjacent dunes.

Cala Torta

Cala Torta is located near Cala Mesquida and is very popular among naturism enthusiasts. The sand is fine and white, and there is a beach bar. The surroundings of tamarind trees, rocks, and hills are of paradisiacal beauty. It is accessible by car.

S’Arenalet Beach

Playa S’Arenalet can only be reached by boat or on foot, so it isn’t very crowded. The conditions for snorkeling and surfing are usually excellent. I especially love the natural landscape that surrounds it.

Son Moll Beach

Son Moll Beach is an ideal family beach offering both water activities and beach sports, as well as dining options. The water has a gentle entry and is suitable for all ages.

Activities and Hiking

Ermita de Betlem

If you walk about nine kilometers northwest from Artà, you’ll reach the Hermitage of Betlem. Until 2010, monks from a hermit order lived here, but they have relocated due to their age.

The path to the Ermita de Betlem is flanked by cypress trees

You can also reach the hermitage from Betlem, a neighborhood of Colonia de Sant Pere.

Natural Park of the Llevant Peninsula

The Natural Park of the Llevant Peninsula is a nature park spanning 20,000 hectares and is a hidden treasure for nature lovers. In this significant bird reserve live, among others, ospreys, red kites, falcons, cave pseudoscorpions, and endemic toads of the Balearic Islands.

Vía Verde

The Greenway begins at the old station and follows the old railway line

The Vía Verde is a popular hiking and cycling route about 30 kilometers long that runs from Manacor, passing through Son Carrió and Son Servera, to Artà. Around 5,000 trees and about 15,000 shrubs were planted to transform the old railway track: a true green way!

Cap de Ferrutx

Because the coastal strip of Cap de Ferrutx, including its interior, is mostly uninhabited, independent travelers and hikers especially enjoy this place. The cape forms the northernmost point of Mallorca, and with its cliffs and rocks, it seems wild and desolate.

Weekly Market in Artà

The market in Artà is one of the most beautiful of its kind in the area. It takes place every Tuesday morning in Plaça del Conqueridor.

Not only fruits, vegetables, and other foods are offered, but also a wide variety of handmade products. Both city residents and tourists enjoy shopping here.

The market remains authentic, and I also enjoy buying local products here, but unfortunately, in recent years it has become a small tourist attraction. If you prefer quieter markets, I recommend visiting another market.

Festivities & Events

The event calendar in Artà is full throughout the year. One of the main attractions is undoubtedly the festivity of Sant Antoni de Padua on June 13th. It is followed by the patronal feast of Sant Salvador on August 6th.

In winter, the whole city celebrates another festival called Sant Antoni (January 16th and 17th). Sant Antoni is the patron saint of animals. One of the highlights is the solemn blessing of animals, which takes place on the morning of January 17th in the main square.

In early September, many island residents visit the well-known agricultural fair in Artà.

Restaurants in Artà

There are many charming bars and good restaurants in Artà, located both in the old town and just a stone’s throw from the church, as well as in its surroundings.

It’s worth taking a look at the menus, which include delicious authentic island specialties.

Sa Gripia

Sa Gripia offers a daily menu with 6-8 different dishes of Mallorcan cuisine. This includes tapas, fresh seafood, and excellent meat dishes. The idyllic location and the beautiful interior patio with lemon trees create a charming atmosphere. It’s my top recommendation for a visit to Artà.

  • Address: Carrer de la Rosa, 1, 07570 Artà
  • Closed on Sundays, open only until 4:00 PM on Tuesdays

Restaurante Es Taronger

Es Taronger offers its diners Mallorcan and Mediterranean dishes. It is located in the pedestrian area at Carrer de Ciutat, 26. They offer a variety of tapas, delicious paella, as well as fresh fish and excellent meat dishes like filet with foie gras.

The value for money is good, and you can enjoy a relaxed evening here. Although the selection of vegetarian or vegan dishes is limited, it is available.

  • Address: C. de Ciutat, 26, 07570 Artà
  • Closed on Thursdays, open only until 5:30 PM on Wednesdays

Ses Cosines is known for its excellent burgers and creative tapas. The cozy atmosphere is particularly noteworthy for its charming interior patio. In addition to the good selection of dishes, they also offer a well-stocked drink menu with an impressive selection of gins.

  • Address: Carrer de Montserrat Blanes, 2, 07570 Artà
  • Closed on Wednesdays

Grill & Tapas Ca Nostra

The “Ca Nostra” restaurant in Artà offers a pleasant atmosphere despite being located on a roundabout. The menu includes a good selection of dishes based on house-aged meat and fresh fish. I also recommend the extensive selection of regional wines.

  • Address: Carrer del Tren, 1, 07570 Artà
  • Closed on Mondays

My Conclusion: Artà, the Beauty of the Northeast

With the Calvary, the Church of Sant Salvador, the picturesque alleyways, and the stunning views of the surroundings, Artà is undoubtedly a gem. It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t succumb to the special charm of this town. And for those seeking to cool off in the summer, some of the most beautiful beaches of Mallorca are nearby.
