Discover the beautiful Campent Caves

By Richard Hanke, updated on

In 1945, a Mallorcan farmer discovered a strange hole in a rock while searching for water. Instead of water, he noticed air coming out of the hole. Intrigued, he enlarged the opening, and what he found has become one of the most fascinating natural experiences on the island of Mallorca: the Campanet Caves.

Map and Location

The Campanet Caves are not located on the coast but rather near the Sierra de Tramuntana. The towns of Campanet and Sa Pobla are just a stone’s throw away.

Visitors venture into this cave system to explore a mysterious world filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

The visit is exciting for both adults and children, and it’s also popular among groups that participate in the interesting guided tours. The Campanet Caves are an excellent option not only for rainy days but also for hot days, as, beneath the earth’s surface and at the edge of the Tramuntana Mountain Range, the temperature is always a bit cooler, around 64 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.

Important information for visiting the Campanet Caves:

  • Opening hours: In summer from 10:00 to 18:00 and in winter from 10:00 to 17:00.
  • The entrance fee is €17.00 for adults and €9.00 for children aged 4 to 12.
  • There is plenty of parking available.

The Caves of Campanet not only offer a cool refuge on hot days but also a unique natural experience that fascinates visitors of all ages.

Explore the beauty of the Mallorcan landscape in a special way

Las Cuevas de Campanet are easy to find. From Palma, take the MA13 highway north. In Campanet, follow the signs to the caves. The route passes through picturesque villages, and the beautiful mountainous surroundings are well worth a stop.

Personally, I like to combine the visit with a stroll through the village, which, with its charming typical Mallorcan-style houses, offers an idyllic and picturesque atmosphere. The caves, which were formed millions of years ago, are hidden on the southern slope of the Puig de Sant Miquel and extend 50 meters underground. Their total surface area exceeds 3,000 square meters. The guided tours cover about 400 meters and last approximately 40 minutes.

Majestic halls and galleries

The Campanet Caves seem straight out of a fantasy world, and one might imagine that magical beings reside within them. There are a total of ten chambers, each with its own name and adorned with formations and columns of stalactites and stalagmites.

One of the most impressive chambers is the Sala del Llac, with its underground lakes. The ecosystem at the heart of the caves is unique, and in 2013, researchers discovered here a previously unknown pseudoscorpion, which seems to exist only in the Campanet Caves and was therefore named Chthonius campaneti.

Good to know:

An audio guide is available. It provides visitors with interesting information during the tour, allowing them to learn a lot about the cave and the Sant Miquel Valley.

After the visit to the cave

The Campanet Caves are surrounded by a beautiful estate with many lush plants and ancient trees. There is also a restaurant very popular among the locals, boasting a lovely sunlit terrace.

If you want to take home a special souvenir from Mallorca, after the cave tour you can visit the small souvenir shop in the entrance lobby. It’s also worth visiting the Ses Fonts Ufanes springs, which are located near the cave. After heavy rains, water gushes from the ground forcefully.

Campanet Caves: Information on hours and tickets

The Campanet Caves are open in summer from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and in winter from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Adults currently pay €17 for admission, while children aged four to twelve pay €9 (prices as of May 2024).

Conclusion

The Campanet Caves are one of the lesser-known attractions of Mallorca. They offer an interesting alternative to the other attractions on the island, both on hot and rainy days.

The visit to the caves can be perfectly combined with a stop at the local restaurant. The local dishes served on the beautiful terrace are an added highlight. I recommend the visit 100%.
