Colònia de Sant Jordi – Map and Location
Colònia de Sant Jordi is located in the southeast of Mallorca and belongs to the municipality of Ses Salines. The capital, Palma de Mallorca, is 52 km away.
About the place
As soon as you arrive in Colònia de Sant Jordi, affectionately known as “the Colonia,” you immediately feel the relaxed, seafaring atmosphere. This coastal village in the south of Mallorca is the gateway to the Cabrera archipelago, a small natural paradise just a boat ride away.
The narrow streets of the village lead to the harbor, where sailboats sway alongside traditional fishing boats. The atmosphere is calm and authentic, far from the tourist bustle of other places. Here, time seems to pass more slowly, and you can enjoy the simple pleasures of life by the sea.
What makes the Colonia so impressive are its beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters, surrounded by unspoiled coves. Es Trenc and Es Carbó are two stunning natural wonders, perfect for a day full of sun and fun in crystal-clear waters.
Nevertheless, the Colony wouldn’t be the same without the extensive salt flats surrounding it, where high-quality sea salt is produced using traditional methods. These salt flats, with their varied shades of ponds and white salt mountains, create a unique landscape and are a significant cultural and economic legacy of the region.
Colònia de Sant Jordi has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca and much more to offer.

Es Trenc
The natural beach of Es Trenc is famous for its white, fine sand and crystal-clear waters. As you walk along the beach, you can often see seagulls gliding over the water. It’s one of those beaches where you feel like everyday life is miles away, as you listen to the gentle murmur of the waves.
With a length of approximately 3 kilometers, Es Trenc offers plenty of space to relax under the sun. Here you’ll find beach bars and loungers for rent. Behind the beach, there is a nature reserve.
The beach is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Colònia de Sant Jordi. A good alternative is to take the bus on route 530, which goes directly from Colònia de Sant Jordi to Es Trenc.
Even though there are no water sports or shops at Es Trenc, it remains a magnet for tourists. I recommend this beach to anyone who needs a break from the daily routine.
Es Dolç
Es Dolç Beach is near Colònia de Sant Jordi and offers crystal-clear waters and a beautiful view of the nearby islands. There are hammocks for rent and a small beach bar offering snacks and drinks. It is about a 15-minute walk from the center and is ideal for swimming and paddleboarding.

Alternatively, you can take a boat ride from the nearby ports to reach the beach directly.
The beach is about 3 kilometers from the town center and is perfect for snorkeling and relaxing. Be sure to bring enough water and snacks, as there are no restaurants or bars there.
Restaurants
Mallorcans love visiting Colònia de Sant Jordi. One reason is the many great restaurants that offer a wide variety of local cuisine, such as fish, rice dishes, and fresh meat.
The Cassai Beach House is a true highlight for all sea lovers. Here you sit directly on the beach and can enjoy the ocean view while trying a variety of delicious tapas. I especially recommend the garlic shrimp, a simple yet delicious dish.
The restaurant Salicornia is located on the lively pedestrian street Gabriel Roca and offers, in addition to an elegant atmosphere, exceptional dishes. When I was there, I tried the grilled squid, served on a bed of fresh local herbs, simply divine!
S’Arroseria is the top spot for paella in the city. The Seafood Paella is a feast for the palate and the eyes. It’s amazing how fresh the seafood looks, as if it came straight from the sea! And for those who want to enjoy a delicious dessert after the meal, I recommend Gelateria Colonial, the first artisanal ice cream shop in the Balearic Islands with organic certification.
Activities and Places of Interest
There’s so much to do in Colònia de Sant Jordi that I didn’t know where to start. The range of activities and attractions is truly extensive.
Natural Park of Cabrera
One of the main attractions of Colònia de Sant Jordi is its proximity to the Cabrera archipelago. This group of islands is a protected natural paradise, located just 10 kilometers off the coast.
In the natural park, there are many species of animals and plants to discover. And best of all: the underwater landscape is also stunning.
From Colònia de Sant Jordi, you can easily reach the island by boat. The trip takes between 30 and 45 minutes, and the entire excursion usually lasts around 6 hours. Tours often include guided visits and opportunities for snorkeling.
Tickets cost between 50 and 60 euros and can be purchased online or directly at the port.
Nature lovers can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of crystal-clear beaches, explore natural trails, and discover a rich marine biodiversity.
You definitely must take a boat trip to this incredible archipelago!
A highlight in the Cabrera archipelago is the Blue Cave. A small cave formed by the sea in the limestone rocks. It is six meters high at the entrance and up to 20 meters inside. In the afternoon, the sun’s rays illuminate it, offering an unforgettable display of light and color with intense blue hues.
Es Trenc salt flats
The historic salt flats are one of the most fascinating places in the area. You can take part in a guided tour to learn more about salt production and explore the impressive pools. The tours usually last about an hour and a half and end with a tasting of high-quality salt.
The entry costs around €8 per person. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.
A visit to the salt flats is an excellent way to learn more about the importance of salt and the history behind the “white mountains.”
Boat tours
I recommend everyone to experience the beauty of the coast of Colònia de Sant Jordi from a completely new perspective, from a boat. It’s a truly special experience. Whether it’s an exciting motorboat ride, a peaceful sailboat journey, or a relaxing pedalo excursion, the variety of boat trips is truly impressive.
Sunset sailing trips are especially popular, creating an unforgettable experience on the open sea. For families who prefer something calmer, pedal boats are an excellent way to explore the coast at their own pace.
Companies offer half-day and full-day tours. Many of these tours include snorkeling, diving, or even a small onboard picnic. The prices of these tours vary according to the season and duration, but generally range between 50 and 60 euros per person.
Along the port of Colònia de Sant Jordi, the providers of these fantastic routes are already waiting for you!
A Visit to the Sant Jordi Festival
The legend of Saint George tells the story of a brave knight who defeated a terrible dragon to save a princess. With his sword, he charged into battle and vanquished the beast that had terrorized an entire kingdom. His heroic victory granted him eternal fame and made him the patron of many places.
On April 23rd, St. George’s Day, I eagerly headed to Colònia de Sant Jordi to experience the annual celebration in honor of the patron saint of the place. Everywhere, the colors red and yellow, the colors of St. George, were visible. The festive atmosphere was palpable in the air.
I got carried away and soon ended up at a “Pa amb oli” stand. “You have to try this, it’s a must!” laughed the vendor as he handed me a slice.
I kept walking through the streets, passing by children dressed as knights imitating the legendary Saint George. They even pulled me into a dance circle, where, under the guidance and laughter of the onlookers, I attempted a few dance steps.
As night fell, everyone gathered in the main square. A group performed a traditional dance that depicted the battle of Saint George against the dragon. The movements were so powerful and expressive that you could almost feel the breath of the legend.
Hotels
Colònia de Sant Jordi is a very special place that, despite its tourist facilities with numerous hotels and various types of accommodations, has preserved its authentic Mallorcan charm.
Here everyone finds something to their liking – in the Colony, anything is possible!
Here are some of my recommendations:
Hotel | Price per Night (Approx.) | Facilities |
---|---|---|
Fontsanta Hotel Thermal & Spa | €250-350 | Thermal baths, spa, luxury restaurant, gym, airport transfer |
Villa Piccola | €80-120 | Garden, outdoor pool, free parking on the premises, airport transfer |
Hotel Martorell | €90-130 | Outdoor pool, restaurant, bar |
How to get there
Colonia de Sant Jordi is accessible by various routes. Whether you want to explore the area or are looking for a quick and comfortable journey, you’ll find a suitable route.
By car: From Palma de Mallorca airport, it takes about 40 minutes. The best way is to take the Ma-19 highway south (Campos/Felanitx/Santanyí) and then follow the signs to Colònia de Sant Jordi.
By bus: From Palma, there are direct buses to Colònia de Sant Jordi. Line 517 offers regular connections, and the trip takes about an hour and a half. A single ticket costs 4.50 euros, making the bus the most economical option.
Taxis are readily available at the airport or in Palma and offer a convenient, but more expensive, option for reaching Colònia de Sant Jordi. The cost of a trip ranges from 50 to 70 euros each way, depending on traffic congestion and the time of day.
A little tip:
Even though Mallorca isn’t very large, exploring the island from Colònia de Sant Jordi, which is at the southern tip, can take time. If you plan to explore the island during your stay, I recommend renting a car.
Parking
Near Es Trenc and the beaches around Colònia de Sant Jordi, there are several paid parking lots. These parking lots are usually marked with signs indicating “Parking” or “P.” In peak season, the rates range between 15 and 20 euros per day.
Most of these parking lots are just a few minutes’ walk from the beaches and often offer a shuttle service that’s included in the price. Especially in the more distant parking lots, the shuttle service is a welcome convenience.
Unfortunately, the free parking in Colònia de Sant Jordi is very limited. Most of it is located in the town center, especially near the harbor and the main shopping street. However, these parking spots fill up quickly during the high season. If you want to use one of these options, it’s best to arrive early.
My advice:
Search in the residential areas on the outskirts of town, as you’re more likely to find parking there.
Living in Colònia de Sant Jordi
Colònia de Sant Jordi is relatively affordable compared to other places in Mallorca. The prices for food and services are moderate. You can also eat well at the restaurants without spending a lot of money. For long-term visitors or those looking to settle there, apartment and house rentals are much more economical than in Palma.
The coastal city is small but has everything you need. There are several supermarkets, including big chains like Eroski, offering a wide range of products. Banks, a post office, and small boutiques are also located in the center.
The community in Colònia de Sant Jordi is truly welcoming and hospitable. Many residents speak, in addition to Catalan and Spanish, English and some even German, which makes communication between visitors and foreign residents easier.
Conclusion
Colònia de Sant Jordi is the perfect place to unwind in Mallorca. This charming fishing village with its narrow streets and welcoming promenade has completely won me over.
The dream beach of Es Trenc, the excellent snorkeling spots in Cabrera, and the fascinating salt flats of Es Trenc make this place a little paradise. If you want to experience the authentic and relaxed side of the island, this is the perfect spot. Colonia is definitely worth a visit for a relaxing vacation!
