The art museum “Es Baluard” in Palma is an ingenious architectural work, integrated into the historic Es Baluard de Sant Pere city wall from the 16th/17th century. With an exhibition area of approximately 2,500 square meters, it is almost imperceptible from the outside.
The museum houses the collection of the late newspaper publisher Pedro Serra, consisting of 300 paintings and sculptures by prominent Spanish and international artists, ranging from classical modernism to contemporary works. Among the names are René Magritte, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Salvador Dalí, Balthus, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Paul Gauguin, and Anselm Kiefer.
A visit to the museum is worthwhile, even if only for the panorama: 3,000 square meters of terraces and pathways offer impressive views of the port and the capital. The inauguration in January 2004 was celebrated over several days with an extensive program of events. The glamour was provided by the royal family and 500 guests from politics, business, and culture.
The grand opening gala at the Auditorium, featuring artists such as Gloria Estefan and Julio Iglesias, was broadcast live on Spain’s main television channel, TVE.
