Wine not only brings out truth but also much joy to the life of any lover of this beverage. September is the month of the grape harvest and wine festivals, and, of course, this also happens in Mallorca. On the last Sunday of September, locals and wine enthusiasts savor the latest wines and a truly sticky experience. The town of Binissalem, known for its wine production in the center of Mallorca, celebrates every year, after the harvest, the island’s largest wine festival for two weeks.
The grape always in the spotlight
The grape harvest extends until the end of September. As the crowning event, the famous wine festival in Binissalem, the Festa des Vermar, is celebrated, following the same traditions since time immemorial.
Every day, the small town offers a different event. As is typical in many Mallorcan festivals, the beginning is marked by decorated floats, accompanied by traditional dances and music. Following this, the grape harvesters are welcomed in the Town Hall square. The next day, everyone can be kids again with the famous phrase “ready, set, grape!”
The famous grape battle, followed by live music, brings together young people who throw over ten tons of ripe grapes at each other. It’s best to leave elegant clothes at home that day. Another highlight is the grape-stomping competition in the church square. Encouraged by local pipers, participants try to extract as much juice as possible.
In addition to the fun with grapes, the wine tasting cannot be overlooked. At the wine fair, with tastings and subsequent sales of the latest wines, the vintners of the region compete to have the best wine.
It’s worth getting along with the Mallorcans
The grand outdoor feast offers a good variety. The city serves Mallorcan specialties on a giant table one day. However, tourists must receive a private invitation from the locals to participate, as the tables are provided by individuals.
As a finale, at 10:00 PM in the village square of Binissalem, a dance evening with live music is held, where everyone is welcome.
If you want to taste wines, you can visit a small wine fair on Saturdays and Sundays and try different wines from the Binissalem wineries. The full program is available on the Town Hall’s website www.ajbinissalem.net.
