At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a refuge for the rich and famous; today, it is a temple of art and a meeting point for the cultural scene: the former “Gran Hotel” in Plaça Weyler was built in 1901 by the Mallorcan architect and disciple of Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Muntaner.
The painters Joaquim Mir and Santiago Rusiñol created seven enormous murals in the dining room. The hand-painted ceramics were provided by the famous “La Roqueta” factory. This magnificent building, in Catalan Modernist style, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1993, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía inaugurated the La Caixa Foundation here, which currently owns the “Gran Hotel.”
A permanent exhibition of the painter Anglada Camarasa, interesting temporary exhibitions, and a wide range of conferences and seminars make the building a vibrant cultural center. A striking detail: the two-meter-tall clothespin sculpture by Joan Miró.
