The Alfabia Gardens in the Tramuntana

By Richard Hanke, updated on

Imagine you are a beautiful princess or a brave prince in a tale from the Arabian Nights. As you stroll through the Alfabia Gardens, this dream easily becomes reality: it’s like a journey to the Far East.

The Alfabia Gardens estate is located in a valley surrounded by olive and almond groves. It is believed to have been built in the 12th century, right where a spring from the Serra de Tramuntana originates. As a result, the water on this terraced estate remains cool and refreshing even on hot summer days.

All the plants and fountains are fed by a sophisticated system of channels that run through the artistic garden. Highlights include an arched corridor that sprays water and a lily pond. Typical of the Hispano-Arabic gardening tradition is the combination of fruit trees and ornamental plants. In this Mediterranean oasis, 43 species of trees and shrubs proudly grow.

One of the most exotic sights is the Chorisia, which can reach up to 15 meters in height: its trunk is densely covered with pink thorns. A symbol of the connection between East and West is the avenue of palm trees in front of the country house: for many centuries, Mallorca was a magnet for all cultures of the Mediterranean.
