The Almudaina Palace (Palacio de La Almudaina) is also known as the Royal Palace. It is located in Palma de Mallorca, right across from the Cathedral of La Seu. The ancient Arab fortress was remodeled in the 14th century and now features a Gothic style.
When the Spanish monarch is visiting Mallorca, the national flag flies over the Almudaina Palace. In its luxurious offices, the regents receive official guests. In the times of the emirs, high-ranking visitors could arrive directly by ship, as the imposing Moorish building was in the 10th century directly at the edge of the sea.
In 1309, James II ordered a complete remodeling of the palace, as he wanted to use it as a summer residence. Today, the complex of more than 20,000 square meters houses the Balearic “Capitania General” (Military Command).
Only a small part of the building is open to the public. A visit is worthwhile just for the terrace: a magnificent view of the harbor and the “S’ Hort del Rei” garden. At the entrance, visitors are equipped with headphones and a wristband device.
Anyone can be guided in their native language through halls, courtyards, Arab baths, royal offices, the throne room, and the Gothic chapel of Santa Ana.
A must-see for art lovers: Flemish and Spanish tapestries from the 16th to 18th centuries!
