Every Tuesday until 1:30 PM, the island’s inhabitants sell their textiles, souvenirs, and handicrafts in the main square of the Theater (Placa del Conqueridor) of this beautiful small town.
In addition to pottery, one of the oldest trades on the island of Mallorca, this market is especially known for selling its traditional basketry products. Only a few local inhabitants still master the art of basket weaving. Through different weaving techniques, artistic patterns are created in the products, making them unique pieces. Baskets, hats, backpacks, and bags made from dried dwarf palm leaves are perfect as souvenirs or gifts to take home.
The sale of fruits, vegetables, eggs, and other fresh foods takes place in the covered market, whose entrance is somewhat hidden towards Carrer Nou. The weekly market in Artà is very popular and always bustling with people.
For those seeking a bit of tranquility, we recommend stopping by the pilgrimage church of Sant Salvador. You’ll need to climb 180 steps, but the effort is definitely worth it. Once at the top, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Artà surroundings that even extends to the sea. If you’re willing to walk about five minutes, you’ll find plenty of parking options at the town’s entrance. Coming from Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, enter the Artà roundabout. At the end of the street, behind the gas station, there is a large free parking lot.
