Each season in Mallorca has its magical moments. Especially Christmas. I admit, for those who haven’t experienced the Christmas season on the island, it might be hard to imagine that with mild temperatures, the Christmas spirit can emerge. We can only recommend: Give it a try!
The Christmas season and the time leading up to it in Mallorca are magical. It all starts with the official turning on of the Christmas lights at the end of November. Entire streets in Palma are decorated with Christmas lights as early as September. Here, the city spares no expense or effort.
A day before Black Friday, accompanied by various festivities, the main switch is turned on at a specific time. It’s worth witnessing this spectacle, for instance, at the Passeig del Born. Teary eyes guaranteed. The Christmas lights are removed in January, since January 6th marks the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Palma.
Traditionally, January 6th in Spain is celebrated like December 24th in other places. However, the practice of giving gifts on December 24th is increasingly being adopted. A small present is given on January 6th, similar to what happens with St. Nicholas in other countries.
There is no Christmas season without a Christmas market
This also applies to Mallorca. So, on the island, there are several Christmas markets. Here we’ve gathered the most beautiful ones.
Palma becomes a Christmas market
In five central squares in Palma, numerous Christmas booths are set up during the season. Plaça Major, Las Ramblas, Vía Roma, Plaça d’Espanya, and Plaça Porta Pintada attract visitors with stalls offering Christmas decorations, sweets, and savory foods.
And, of course, there’s also mulled wine. In Plaça d’Espanya, next to the train station, an ice skating rink is set up, bringing a winter atmosphere to Palma. If you want to get into the holiday spirit or do some shopping, Palma is the place to be.
Christmas Market in Puerto Portals
In Puerto Portals, you can also immerse yourself in the Christmas atmosphere. The Christmas market in Puerto Portals is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and largest on the island. Here you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine or champagne with a sausage while shopping for gifts or Christmas decorations. You can also find jewelry, bags, clothing, and art.
Christmas Market in the Spanish Village
In the season leading up to Christmas, Pueblo Español transforms into a true Christmas village. With Christmas music, sometimes live, familiar Christmas traditions (mainly German) are celebrated, such as eating sausages and drinking mulled wine.
There are several Christmas stalls where you can buy decorations, jewelry, or clothing. To create a wintery atmosphere, artificial snow falls over the visitors to the Christmas market.
Everything, along with excellent lighting and the fact that in winter temperatures in Mallorca can drop to as low as 5 degrees at night, creates a fantastic Christmas atmosphere. Unfortunately, the Christmas market in Pueblo Español is only open for a few days. We provide information about the dates in our news.
