You can discover the stars on the island, just a bit away from the quaint village of Costitx. Since 2003, Mallorca’s planetarium has stood on a hill there.
The fourteen-meter-high dome, a metallic hemisphere, resembles a UFO. Inside, a virtual sky shines with just the push of a button. Around 6,000 stars are projected onto the circular screen by high-performance computers.
The images are transmitted in real time by nearby and distant telescopes. This show is unique in all of Europe. Up to 100 visitors can enjoy the spectacle together in the circular room. The “ZKP 3 Skymaster” planetarium projector was supplied by the traditional company Zeiss.
Of course, visitors can also look through telescopes at the real sky over Mallorca. One thing that stands out particularly well: Saturn’s ring.
The planetarium was built next to the already existing Mallorca Astronomical Observatory (OAM). Inaugurated in 1991, the OAM is highly regarded in the scientific community as Spain’s most easterly observatory. It’s worth a visit, as ten interesting mobile telescopes are displayed in an impressive hall.
