Its lively promenade is filled with cafes, restaurants, and bars offering culinary delights for all tastes. The relaxed and vacation-like atmosphere makes it the perfect place for those who wish to bask in the sun and make the most of the tranquil life by the Mediterranean. It is particularly a very popular destination among British tourists.

Map and Location

Port de Pollença, also known as Puerto de Pollença, is located in the north of the island of Mallorca. This place is situated in the Bay of Pollença, approximately 6 kilometers from the town of Pollença.

About the place

The charming Port of Pollença was originally a fishing village. The swift transition to a tourist destination began in the early 20th century, becoming a popular summer spot for Mallorca’s upper classes. They built large vacation homes with spectacular views of the harbor and the beach.

International tourism soon followed, and the place became one of the most popular spots in Mallorca, especially among British and German tourists who fell in love with the bay.

The landscape is truly spectacular, surrounded by the Sierra de Tramuntana, a dramatic mountain range that embraces the broad, horseshoe-shaped bay.

The city’s extraordinary surroundings also make it a dream destination during peak season for water sports enthusiasts, as there is always a breeze.

The strict construction regulations in Port de Pollença prevent excessive deterioration as seen in other tourist destinations. These rules ensure that all new buildings and renovations seamlessly fit into the existing urban landscape.

As a result, Port de Pollença has been able to maintain its unique character and traditional appearance to this day.

The three highlights of Port de Pollença

Here are some of the aspects that, in my opinion, make this coastal town so special:

  1. Water Sports Options: Port de Pollença offers ideal conditions for water sports enthusiasts. Equipment for windsurfing, paddleboarding, and sailing can be rented throughout the bay. There is also a wide selection of courses available. Prices for an hour of paddleboarding start at around €15, while a windsurfing session costs from €25 per hour. Sailing courses and excursions are also available, starting at about €40 per person.
  2. The Seafront Promenade: The lively atmosphere of Port de Pollença’s promenade attracts travelers. You can stroll along the beach, relax at one of the many cafés, or enjoy local cuisine at the restaurants. An evening walk is especially recommended. As the sun sets over the Tramuntana Mountains and slowly disappears behind the silhouette, the landscape looks like a postcard.
  3. Albercutx Tower: This historic watchtower is about 6 kilometers north of the center of Port de Pollença and offers an excellent view of the entire bay. Albercutx Tower, often called the “Pirates’ Tower,” is an ideal destination for a hike or a short excursion. The route to the tower goes through beautiful landscapes and is easy to navigate, making it a perfect destination for the whole family.

It’s best reached by car or bus, and the drive along the winding roads is an adventure in itself. The town’s narrow streets invite exploration, with small boutiques and charming plazas perfect for enjoying a coffee in the shade of trees. The atmosphere of the old town is simply captivating. A highlight is climbing the 365 steps to Mount Calvari, which offers an impressive view of the town and surrounding mountains.
  • Es Colomer Viewpoint: Located near Port de Pollença, this viewpoint is easily accessible by car. This spot is known for its spectacular panoramic views of the sea and surrounding nature. Photography tip: The best time to visit is early morning when the sun rises, and the tourist crowds are still far away.
  • Pine Walk (Paseo de los Pinos): One of the most popular attractions in Port de Pollença is a stroll along the beach. The pedestrian and cycling path stretches around the bay. North of the harbor, at the beginning of Passeig Vora Mar, it turns into a pedestrian zone. This is where the famous “Pine Walk” begins. The many old pine trees lining the path provide pleasant shade throughout the summer.

Restaurants

Most of the restaurants are located in the center of Puerto Pollensa and offer a stunning view of the sea.

A meal or dinner in Puerto Pollensa is the perfect plan for a special night with couples, friends, or families. Here are my favorites:

1. Tierra de Fuegos

Here, Spanish cuisine with a modern twist is expected in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. A great place to enjoy a peaceful meal in a pleasant setting. My advice: I tried the ‘Pulpo a la Gallega’ at Tierra de Fuegos and loved it. Served on a bed of hot potatoes, this dish is an absolute delight.

Parking

In Port de Pollença, there are several parking options, both paid and free. Most of the parking areas in the city center are marked as “Blue Zone,” which means parking fees apply and the ticket must be visible in the vehicle. Costs can vary depending on the season, but generally range from 1 to 2 euros per hour.

Especially during peak season, it’s difficult to find available parking spaces along the streets.

Next to the marina, there is a free parking lot. This parking lot is easily accessible and provides direct access to nearby attractions at the port.

Just a five-minute walk from the start of Paseo de los Pinos, there is also a large public parking lot. This can also be used for free. This option is especially appealing for those who want to stay longer in the city without paying high parking fees. Of course, it fills up very quickly! Try to arrive as early as possible.

Wednesday Market

Every Wednesday, the center of Port de Pollença transforms into a lively market that attracts both locals and tourists.

  • Location: The market takes place along the main street “Paseo Saralegui” and in the Church Square.
  • Hours: The stalls are usually open from early morning until around 1:30 PM.
  • Offerings: The market features a wide variety of products, from fresh regional fruits and vegetables to handcrafted souvenirs, as well as local cheeses and cured meats. It’s also common to find crafts, clothing, handmade jewelry, leather goods, and traditional Mallorcan textiles.

During a visit to the Port de Pollença market, I discovered a small stall selling traditional Mallorcan spices. The vendor, a kind and elderly gentleman, invited me to try some of them.

She explained to me how each spice is used and gave me recipes for typical island dishes. I bought saffron at that stall and used it that very night to make a paella.

How to get there

  • By car: From Palma de Mallorca, the Ma-13 leads directly to Port de Pollença. The journey takes about 50 minutes and offers a scenic route along the coast and through the mountains. Parking is available in the town, but it can be scarce during the high season. It is advisable to arrive early or use a parking space a bit outside the center to avoid stress.
  • By bus: Line 340 connects Palma with Port de Pollença. The journey costs about 6 euros and takes approximately 75 minutes. The bus stops in Port de Pollença are centrally located and provide good access to the harbor area.
  • By bicycle: For the more active, arriving by bicycle is an excellent option. Well-developed bike lanes make the route safe and enjoyable. There are bike rental stations in both Palma and Port de Pollença. The rental costs for a bicycle are around 15 euros per day, depending on the bike model. Here are two companies that offer this service: https://rentmarch.com and https://bergantibikes.com/en/bike-hire-mallorca.

Festivals

There are festivities that simply can’t be missed, and in Port de Pollença, there are some of those.

Feast of Saint Peter

At the end of June, Port de Pollença celebrates the patron saint of sailors, Saint Peter. For two days, the place comes alive with a mix of Balearic folk dances, maritime exhibitions, and vibrant musical performances. Especially impressive are the processions, which take place both at sea and on land, representing the community’s relationship with the sea.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The week before July 16th is a very special time in Port de Pollença, marked by the celebration in honor of the patron saint of fishermen, the Virgin of Carmen. I was fortunate to be there last year, and it was an unforgettable experience. The festive atmosphere began early in the morning when the fishermen decorated their boats with colorful flowers.

As evening fell, everyone gathered at the port to watch the procession of boats, a truly picturesque spectacle, as the decorated vessels glided slowly over the shimmering waters. After the procession, the streets came alive with music and dance. The most impressive part was the fireworks display at dusk, which turned the sky over Port de Pollença into a sea of spectacular colors.
