Sa Cabrera - The "Island of Goats" near Mallorca

By Verena Gemmel, updated on

Every morning around nine-thirty, boats depart from the idyllic small port of Colònia de Sant Jordi to the neighboring island of Cabrera (spring to fall; in winter accessible only by private boats).

The trip takes approximately one hour. The return trip is usually in the afternoon, around four o’clock. Until then, you will have time to explore the paradisiacal flora and fauna. In 1991, Cabrera and its 18 satellite islets were declared a national park, covering a total of 10,000 hectares, the first in Spain to include both land and maritime areas.

Divers here discover small octopuses, groupers, moray eels, and many other interesting underwater inhabitants. On land, they encounter dark lizards of the endemic species “Podarcis lilfordi.”

The boat tour costs around 28 euros per adult, plus approximately six euros for the onboard meal. Those wishing to visit the island with their own boat need a permit from the park administration (Tel.: 971-72 50 10, www.reservasmarinas.com).
