Charming Sa Capelleta chapel in Mallorca

Sa Capelleta: A Stone Tale in the Serra de Tramuntana

By Richard Hanke, updated on

Today I am taking you to a true hidden treasure of the island, the small chapel Sa Capelleta. This unique architectural gem is nestled between Sóller and Fornalutx, in a completely idyllic setting.

One day, I saw a photo of a haunted church in Mallorca. Unfortunately, it didn’t mention the name of the chapel, let alone where it was located in Mallorca.

I was so impressed by this peculiar construction that I decided to search for it. Even though it took me months and I sometimes doubted that this chapel really existed in Mallorca, I finally found it. Now it is one of my favorite places, which I always show to friends visiting the island, and now also to you.

Map and Location

Sa Capelleta is located in the Serra de Tramuntana, between the villages of Sóller and Fornalutx.

Un lugar mágico

When you enter the grounds, you will feel like you’re in a fairy tale or on a movie set. It’s like being in a Harry Potter movie. The stone wall surrounding the small garden gives the chapel a mysterious, almost slightly ghostly aura. Although the church entrance is always closed, you can peek inside through small openings in the door, and the view is truly worth it.

Unique altar of Sa Capelleta resembling a stunning stalactite cave interior.

The altar is designed like a stalactite cave and houses sculptures of the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernadette. Large stained glass windows on all sides of the building let in ample light. Pines, ancient olive trees, and tall cypresses provide shade around the chapel, where you can sit on one of the stone benches and enjoy the tranquility.

Even for kids, the visit is an experience. The place is perfect for telling a little scary story during a picnic. You can also relax in the shade while the children explore the fenced area.

El origen de la iglesia Sa Capelleta

The chapel was built in the year 1917 thanks to the efforts of Father Pere-Lluc Ripoll i Moragues. It was erected in homage to Our Lady of Lourdes and exudes a special atmosphere. Its unique architectural style makes it a true treasure, at least in Mallorca.

Whether you arrive on foot from Sóller or by car, this stop is worth it. With a car, you can park on the unpaved access road, located between Sóller and Fornalutx. Look for a sign on the right side and try to park there on the gravel path. Then walk about 50 meters down the path.

On the right side, in front of the entrance door to the Santuari de Santa Maria de l’Olivar des Fenàs, is the entrance to the grounds of this fairytale chapel, right next to a large wooden cross.

Attention:

On Mondays, the entrance to the grounds is closed, so it is not possible to visit the chapel.

Conclusion

Sa Capelleta is one of my favorite places on the island. Most of the time, you’re there alone in silence and can absorb the special aura of this place. It is a true place of silence and reflection, a real hidden treasure for the whole family.
