The rugged and wild island of Sa Dragonera is located off the southwest coast of Mallorca. They are separated by the narrow Canal des Freu, which is only about 800 meters wide. The 288-hectare island gets its name “island of the dragon” due to its distinctive shape and the numerous lizards that inhabit it. Sa Dragonera is noted for its exceptional beauty and fascinating landscapes.
Almost 400 plant species are native to this island. Sa Dragonera is known for its large number of black lizards, which are found everywhere. These belong to the species Podarcis lilfordi and are endemic, meaning they are only found on Sa Dragonera (and some nearby islands). They are very trusting and have almost no fear of humans. In addition to the well-known Dragonera lizard, the island hosts numerous other animals, especially birds (including several species of falcons).
Map and Access to Dragon Island Sa Dragonera
Sa Dragonera is a protected area and is vehicle-free. It is part of the municipality of Andratx. It can be easily reached by boat or ferry from Sant Elm (San Telmo).
The destination port is located in the picturesque Cala Lladó cove, where there is also a small ranger station. This cove is the starting point for four very beautiful hiking trails of varying lengths, leading to the Na Miranda viewpoint, the Cap de Tramuntana lighthouse, the summit of Na Pòpia, which rises about 350 meters, and the Far de Llebeig lighthouse.
The shortest route is 1.1 kilometers long, while the longest one measures 9.2 kilometers: there are options for all nature lovers! Sa Dragonera, located off the southwestern tip of Mallorca, is one of the most untouched islands in the Balearic Islands and is perfect for an unforgettable excursion with the whole family.
Exploring the heart of the natural park
Sa Dragonera, along with the small islands Pantaleu and La Mitjana, forms a natural park. Anyone wanting to hike here should bring provisions and drinks, as there is nothing to purchase on the rocky island of Sa Dragonera.
This is positive, as environmental protection has the highest priority in this protected area.
From Sant Elm, the boat trip to Dragon Island takes only a quarter of an hour, leaving ample time for an extended visit. From a distance, you might think you’re approaching a sleeping dragon. The head, the spine, the tail: the island really does have an unusual shape. And it looks like the dragon is sleeping.
However, scientists attribute the name Sa Dragonera to the Latin term “Tracones.” In the Middle Ages, this term was used to refer to underground water conduits. The island played an important role in supplying water to ancient ships. Sa Dragonera has a maximum width of 900 meters and a length of 4.2 kilometers.
At the highest peak stands the Far Vell lighthouse. The view from this 353-meter high mountain above the sea is simply fantastic!
The natural park of Sa Dragonera and its history
Anyone visiting the island will be mainly interested in the park’s stunning nature and the panoramic views in all directions, but its history is also very interesting.
For centuries, Dragon Island was an important refuge for pirates. They used to hide in the island’s numerous caves. In 1974, a banking consortium wanted to develop modern tourist complexes on Sa Dragonera, which included helipads, casinos, and marinas.
However, thanks to the great commitment of the residents of Mallorca and the influence of the nature protection association, the construction of these projects was prevented. Instead, the government of Mallorca declared the island a natural park in 1995, protecting it from any type of development.
Since then, Sa Dragonera has been a haven for native flora and fauna and a natural jewel, ensuring a unique experience for all visitors.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Sa Dragonera and marvel at its natural beauty and rich history!
Beautiful Dragon Island with Unique Landscapes
The hiking trails can be a bit uneven at times, but they are navigable, and if you want, you can also swim in the sea at an especially beautiful spot.
Information
The island is also accessible for people in wheelchairs. The only difficulty is when boarding and disembarking from the boat, as it’s necessary to leave the seated position. Wheelchairs are transported free of charge on the ferry.
The 4 Hiking Routes on the Island
Route 1: Camí de Tramuntana
The walk goes from the pier to the northern lighthouse, offering stunning views of the sea and cliffs. The route is easy and goes through Mediterranean vegetation. (Approximate duration: 1.5 hours)
Route 2: Camí de Llebeig
This route goes from the dock on the east side of the island to the southwest lighthouse. The path is challenging, as it crosses steep and rocky trails. (Approximate duration: 2 hours)
Route 3: Camí de Na Pòpia
The path to the highest point of the island, Na Pòpia, is demanding and steep. At the summit, there are the ruins of an ancient lighthouse. From there, you will have an incredible 360-degree panoramic view of the island and the surrounding sea. (Approximate duration: 3 hours)
Route 4: Camí de Cala Lladó
This easy walk from the pier to the small cove Cala Lladó is especially recommended for families with children. It’s ideal for a relaxed exploration of the coast and offers opportunities for swimming and observing the agile lizards. (Approximate duration: 1 hour)
It doesn’t matter if hikers choose Route 1, 2, 3, or 4. The small black lizards are found all over the island. Important: It is strictly prohibited to feed or touch the lizards!

Important to know:
What may seem obvious to many, I still want to mention here. Bringing animals to the island is not allowed. Therefore, a pleasant walk with your dog on Sa Dragonera is out of the question.
Conclusion
Not only adventurers will be delighted with an excursion to the island. Although its surface area is relatively small, there is much to discover here: especially concerning the flora and fauna.
Visitors will find a slightly different Mallorca here, which, like the Serra de Tramuntana, has a unique charm. For me, the Island of the Dragon is a spectacular natural paradise and, in part, even mysterious and enchanted.
A trip that, in my opinion, is worth it for anyone looking to unplug a little.
