Sóller - One of the most beautiful towns in Mallorca

By Agostina Marzullo, updated on

Sóller, nestled in the “Golden Valley,” captivates with its picturesque location between the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana. This place is a must-see for those visiting Mallorca.

Why? Because the historic tram and traditional architecture simply charm everyone. Many consider this little village to be one of the most beautiful in Spain. Walking through the streets of the town center, one is immediately transported to the past.

Map and Location

Sóller is located in the northwest of Mallorca, in the middle of the Serra de Tramuntana. The town is approximately 30 kilometers northwest of the capital, Palma de Mallorca.

About Sóller

Sóller is known for its rich history and vibrant culture. It is located in the so-called “green valley of oranges” and is surrounded by the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana.

The narrow streets around the main square are perfect for a leisurely stroll and a visit to the typical small shops. In Sóller, you can enjoy a wonderful walk, but you must always be careful not to get lost in the numerous alleys.

In summary: Sóller won’t disappoint you!

One of the most notable features of Sóller is the historic tram that connects the main square, Plaça Constitució, with the port of Sóller. The journey through the picturesque landscape is an authentic experience. During the ride on the wooden tram, one glides through the natural beauties of the region. It is a very special experience to be transported in this historical treasure.

The city port is just a short tram ride from the center of Sóller. Port de Sóller is a truly charming seaside spot. The numerous seafood restaurants right on the shoreline invite you to enjoy not only the local cuisine but also the wonderful view. Additionally, many maritime activities are available, along with a long sandy beach for a relaxing day.

The 13th-century Gothic church of Sant Bartomeu dominates the urban landscape and is a prominent example of sacred architecture on the island. This historical landmark, along with the lively weekly market, attracts visitors eager to experience authentic Mallorcan life. At the market, one can buy not only essential goods but also high-quality products like regional oranges and lemons.

Sóller Cathedral showcases a stunning modernist facade in a picturesque setting.

Sóller also offers a wide variety of natural and cultural discoveries. This includes the Sóller Botanical Garden. In this beautiful botanical garden, you can admire a great diversity of Mediterranean plant species.

My 3 highlights of Sóller:

Sóller is a beautiful and interesting city. It’s hard to highlight just three key points, but these are, in my opinion, unmissable:

  1. Historic Tram: Visitors to Sóller must take the historic tram from Sóller to Port de Sóller. It’s a must-do! The tram is a real attraction, known as the “orange train.”
It starts its journey in the heart of Sóller, first passing through the main square, with a picturesque route by the cathedral. Then, it follows a charming path through citrus plantations and old olive groves.
And the best part: you can smell what you see. The route gently descends, passing traditional Mallorcan estates, and offers unique views of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. After just a few kilometers, you can already smell the sea air in Port de Sóller.
The tram ride is a special opportunity to experience the connection between the old trading center and the port, and it’s a true retro experience.
You can purchase tickets for the trip here: https://trendesoller.com/
  2. Plaça Constitució: The central square of Sóller, surrounded by cafés and beautiful façades, is the heart of the town. Here, you can observe the daily life of the locals, visit the weekly market, or simply take a break.
In this square, in 1839, the independence of Sóller from the municipality of Fornalutx was proclaimed. The historic square allows visitors to deeply immerse themselves in the history of Sóller.
  3. Sóller Oranges: The world-famous oranges of Sóller are not only a burst of flavor but also a piece of local culture. A walk through the fragrant orange groves, especially when the trees are in full bloom in spring, is a true sensory experience.
There is an opportunity to participate in guided tours of the “Finca Ecovinyassa” plantations. There, you can gain insight into the cultivation and harvest of these delicious fruits. The tour ends with a tasting, where you can sample different varieties directly. The cost ranges from 10 to 18 euros per person.

Beaches

The geographical location of Sóller in Mallorca allows for a vacation not only in the mountainous landscape but also on the beautiful nearby beaches.

Here are my favorite beaches on the northwest coast, near Sóller:

Port de Sóller Beach (also known as Través Beach)

The sandy beach in the port city is framed by the Sierra de Tramuntana. It features a pleasant promenade where the tram that connects Sóller with Port de Sóller runs. The beach, with its fine golden sand, is ideal for families with children.

Golden sands of Port de Sóller beach

It has all the necessary facilities, such as showers, umbrellas, sun loungers, etc. In the vicinity, there are various bars and shops. At the port, you can book catamaran trips to places like Sa Calobra, Torrent de Pareis, and Cala Tuent.

Playa d’en Repic

The beach is located next to the port of Sóller and is about 250 meters long. It’s a family-friendly urban beach with sand and small stones. During the high season, loungers and umbrellas are available.

The waters are usually calm and clear, and the numerous nearby restaurants and small shops complete the vacation experience. The beach can be conveniently reached by public bus and tram from Sóller.

Es Canyeret (or Llucalcari Beach)

Just 8 kilometers from Sóller, you’ll find this beautiful bay with pebble and rocky beaches. The view there is magnificent. Many people visit this spot to cover themselves with mud from a freshwater spring located there. It’s said to have therapeutic properties.

Access to the beach on foot is not easy due to the steep and uneven road.

Cala Deià

10 kilometers from Sóller is this beautiful pebble beach, located between Punta de Son Beltran and Sa Pedrissa, near the towering peaks of Teix and Caragolí in the Serra de Tramuntana. This beach, just about 70 meters long, is often visited by celebrities like actor Michael Douglas and musician Mick Jagger.

Déia Beach features rocky landscapes and clear waters on Mallorcas coastline.

According to a local legend, the Spanish painter Joan Miró was inspired for some of his most famous works while sitting on this beach.

Restaurants

Sóller offers a great culinary variety. Here are my three favorite restaurants in Sóller:

Restaurante Ca’n Boqueta

It is known for being one of the most recommended restaurants in Sóller. The restaurant offers a true Mallorcan home atmosphere and a seasonal menu characterized by high-quality products and excellent service.

It’s important to know: No à la carte food is offered. There is a lunch menu (€19.50), served from Tuesday to Saturday, that changes weekly or biweekly.

Additionally, another menu is offered from Wednesday to Sunday. This one focuses on local and traditional cuisine and also changes every two weeks. The price of the tasting menu is 37.50 euros.

  • Address: Gran Via, 43
  • Hours: Tue – Sat from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM and from 7:45 PM to 12:00 AM

Restaurante Luna 36

With a focus on Spanish cuisine, Luna 36 Restaurant is a true gem in Sóller. The menu offers a variety of dishes. By the way, the ceviche with Sóller lemons is highly recommended for 13 euros.

  • Address: Carrer de sa Lluna, 36
  • Hours: Daily from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM / Friday and Saturday from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM / Closed on Sunday and Wednesday

Can Llimona

For fresh, handmade pasta lovers, Can Llimona is a must-visit. This restaurant places great emphasis on local products and high-quality ingredients. The sorrentinos with lemon pesto for 17.50 euros and the tagliatelle with tomato sauce for 16.50 euros are especially recommended.

  • Address: Carrer de la Victòria 11
  • Hours: Daily from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM and from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM / Closed on Tuesday and Wednesday

Attractions

These attractions should not be missed when visiting Sóller:

Church of Saint Bartholomew

The church is an imposing Gothic structure in the center of Sóller. It is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the city’s identity and history. Its distinctive facade and beautifully designed interiors bear witness to the religious and cultural significance it has held for the community throughout the centuries.

Particularly noteworthy is the large rose window, considered one of the largest of its kind in the Balearic Islands and known for its stunning light displays inside the church.

Each year, the church is the central location of the “Firó” festival, which commemorates Sóller’s defense against pirate attacks.

Botanical Garden

This garden specializes in the flora of the Balearic Islands and offers visitors an oasis of peace and beauty. You can stroll through the various landscaped areas, ranging from dry to humid climates, and admire rare and endemic plants. The garden plays an important role in the research and conservation of Mediterranean biodiversity. Guided tours are also available.

One of the highlights of the garden is the “Orchid Path.” There, you can admire some of the rarest species of orchids in Europe.

Sóller train station

The station is more than just a passageway for travelers. It houses an impressive art gallery showcasing works by Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso.

Train of Sóller at the station

The station itself is an architectural gem. Its blend of modernity and tradition makes it a popular photographic subject.

A visit there is like traveling to another era, without a time machine, just with a train ticket.

The train from Palma to Sóller

Start your day at the Palma train station and board the Sóller Train. This journey offers beautiful views of the Sierra de Tramuntana and takes you directly to the heart of Sóller. You can feel the wind on your face and travel back in time on the train.

From Sóller, continue by tram to Port de Sóller, where you can relax on the beach and try the local delicacies. After a day full of sun and sea, return in the afternoon to Sóller and then take the train back to Palma. A perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. I highly recommend this excursion!

Art & Culture

In Sóller, the art museums are an essential part of the city’s cultural offerings. Notably, the Museu Balear de Ciències Naturals and the Casal de Cultura stand out.

The Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences houses an impressive collection of scientific exhibitions focusing on the island’s flora and fauna. This museum also provides insight into the geological history of the islands and promotes understanding of ecological connections.

The Cultural Center regularly hosts exhibitions of local and international artists. Modern art exhibitions are especially popular, often featuring works by artists who have lived and worked in Mallorca.

The Weekly Market

Every Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, you can observe the activity at the numerous market stalls in Plaza de Sa Constitució.

At the market, you can buy local products. In particular, fresh citrus fruits, typical of the region, are the stars of the market.

On my last visit to the many stalls, I ended up buying a handcrafted ceramic bowl. Along with the delicious freshly squeezed orange juice I drank there, these were the highlights of my visit to the market. I recommend the market 100%.

Festivals

The “Es Firó” festival in Sóller is celebrated every year in May and commemorates the heroic struggle of the inhabitants against pirate attacks in 1561. The streets of Sóller are filled with reenactments of this historic battle, where participants wear detailed costumes and traditional weapons.

The celebration traditionally begins with a procession and a symbolic landing of the pirates at the port. Then, in various places throughout the city, mock battles are staged. The townspeople, who play both the pirates and the local defenders, parade through the city and face off symbolically. This makes the festival a truly impressive experience.

A little personal tip: At “Es Firó,” it’s especially fun if the kids dress up as pirates or defenders. With simple accessories like a bandana or a cardboard sword, they can dive right into the historical adventure. That way, the day also becomes an exciting journey through time for them!

Parking

Parking in Sóller is a real challenge, especially during the peak season. Here is some useful information and tips about parking in the city:

Main parking areas:

  • Parking at the train station: This is located near the Sóller train station and offers a good number of parking spaces. The cost is approximately 0.50 euros per hour. The address is Carrer de sa Lluna, and it is close to the city center.
  • Large public parking lot: Another large parking area is located at the entrance to the town. This is especially recommended during the tourist season, as parking in the center tends to fill up quickly. Parking there costs around 1 euro per hour.

Street Parking: Although the free parking spots on the numerous side streets around the city center are in high demand, it’s also possible to try there. Free parking spaces can often be found, but these spots are highly sought after and usually occupied. Especially on market days and holidays, the chances of finding a parking space there are practically nil.

Parking rules:

  • In many areas of Sóller, parking is time-limited and parking tickets are required, which are available from vending machines.
  • In blue zones, parking is paid, and the maximum parking duration is generally two hours.

Advice:

The farther from the city center, the easier it is to find parking. However, it’s better to visit Sóller using public transportation.

Surroundings

The surroundings of Sóller offer numerous opportunities to explore the stunning nature and culture of Mallorca. Two notable nearby highlights are Port de Sóller and the many hiking routes such as the Dry Stone Route GR221.

Port de Sóller, just a 15-minute ride on a historic tram from Sóller, is known for its harbor and wide beaches. The coastal village attracts numerous visitors in the summer with its promenade and diverse cuisine. Additionally, Port de Sóller is the starting point for various boat excursions along the coast, offering the chance to explore the region’s spectacular cliffs and hidden coves.

The Dry Stone Route, also known as the “Ruta de Pedra en Sec,” is a long-distance hiking trail that runs through the Serra de Tramuntana and includes Sóller in its path.

This path passes through some of the most stunning landscapes in Mallorca, including ancient olive groves, impressive mountains, and peaceful valleys.

The stretch from Sóller to Deià is especially popular for its natural beauty and magnificent views. This route is about 10 kilometers long and takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete (depending on pace and the number of stops).

On a bicycle

For adventurers, it’s also possible to reach Sóller by bike. You follow the Ma-11 and enjoy the view of the Sierra de Tramuntana. This route is challenging, with some inclines, and therefore, it’s only suitable for experienced cyclists.

Life

Sóller, often called the Golden Valley of Mallorca, is characterized by a high quality of life. The place is far from boring.

The unemployment rate in Sóller is low compared to the national average, highlighting the region’s economic stability. In recent decades, significant investments have been made in infrastructure, including the modernization of roads and the transformation of old factories into attractive boutique hotels.

The real estate market in Sóller is limited and expensive, but the investment is worth it due to the high quality of life. The offerings range from rural estates to modern apartments.

Conclusion

The impressive architecture, first-class restaurants, and friendly locals make Sóller an ideal city for both a pleasant vacation and a day trip with the whole family.

The monuments, the proximity to beautiful beaches, and the countless leisure activities give the city a very special charm. Just like in Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa, visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds. In Sóller, you’ll find both the traditional and the modern. Additionally, it is a paradise for culture lovers.
