The weather and climate in Mallorca

By Richard Hanke, updated on

In Mallorca, the sun shines around 300 days a year, so it’s always worth a visit. Relatively few tourists come between October and March, so during the fall and winter months, many hotels and tourist attractions (bars, nightclubs, etc.) are closed. However, during this time, many Spaniards on the island are on vacation. Especially in Palma, several bars and venues are packed with locals in the winter.

Spring in Mallorca

In Germany, spring can be quite cool and rainy, at least in March and April. Especially the famous April weather (“April, April, it doesn’t know what it wants”) can always be a surprise.

The range goes from hail, rain, and snow to sun. The latter, however, remains quite rare. If you need to recharge your batteries, Mallorca is the right place.

The weather in spring in Mallorca

Spring in Mallorca is mild, with average temperatures around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The midday sun can be quite strong, making it perfect to enjoy lunch in a t-shirt and sunglasses.

The island is fresh, everything is in full bloom. The high season and the masses of tourists have not yet arrived. So life in Mallorca in spring is very relaxed. Palma invites you to take a leisurely stroll for shopping or to sit in one of the many outdoor cafés. Live and let live. The season kicks off again in earnest during the Easter holidays (Easter is a tourist highlight).

In spring, it’s usually too cold for swimming. The water temperature ranges between 57 and 61 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the island enchants with a gentle sea of pink and white flowers, thanks to the approximately seven million almond trees. If you’ve never visited Mallorca during the almond blossom season, you definitely should. This spectacular time begins as early as January, and at the latest by early February.

Temperatures in the spring can exceed 20 degrees. Therefore, sunscreen should also be in your luggage, as the sun can be quite strong. Caution: risk of sunburn.

Another advantage in spring is that flights, car rentals, and accommodations in Mallorca are cheaper than during the high season.

Summer in Mallorca

Traditionally, the beginning of summer in Mallorca is celebrated on the night of June 23rd to 24th with the “Nit de Sant Joan“. This is followed by a few months of wonderful summer. Summers in Mallorca are long and often quite hot.

Until October and sometimes even November, it remains quite warm. The water temperatures are inviting for swimming even in October. And there have been islanders who have gone into the sea during Christmas.

Summers in Mallorca are hot and dry

The thermometer especially rises in the months of July and August, often exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The average values are 88 degrees during the day and 64 degrees at night. It’s ideal to have air conditioning or to spend the whole day in the pool. Even so, it’s beautiful.

On warm summer nights, you can stay outside for a long time. The days are wonderfully long. It’s pleasant to be outdoors. And this is probably one of the reasons why people from the south have dinner later. Because in the midday heat, you don’t feel like eating too much.

When, after sunset, the temperatures become more pleasant, the restaurants fill up. And that happens a bit later. In the summer, life wakes up later, and even young children play in the parks late into the night.

The summers in Mallorca are not only hot but also very dry. In July, there are no rainy days, and in August, only 1 day on average. The island often suffers from droughts. When water reserves run low, the island’s government declares a state of emergency and limits the amount of water allowed per day and per household.

Filling the pool with fresh drinking water or watering the garden is prohibited. The warning scale has 4 levels, with level 4 being “Emergency.” The risk of wildfires is very high during these months. Often, a carelessly thrown cigarette butt from a car has started wildfires that affect the local flora and fauna for a long time.

Autumn in Mallorca

While autumn in Germany can be quite cold and unpleasant, summer temperatures in Mallorca extend until November. In October, temperatures easily exceed 20 degrees. In September, the thermometer reaches an average of 27 degrees and often surpasses 30 degrees.

And the water temperature invites swimming until November (around 68 degrees Fahrenheit).

However, in the fall in Mallorca, the likelihood of rain also increases. There are between 4 and 5 days of rain in the fall. Additionally, the meteorological phenomenon known as the “Gota Fría,” meaning “cold drop,” can occur.

Autumn in Mallorca is beautiful because the island breathes and recovers from the summer tourist crowds. You can enjoy numerous walks and places of interest in a relaxed manner and with pleasant temperatures. Another advantage is the lower prices for flights, rental cars, and accommodations in the fall.

Winter in Mallorca

Long walks on the beach, as the wind clears the mind, have their own charm. Palma, without the hordes of tourists that dominate it in summer, has a completely different appeal. And in many cities and towns on the island, many festivals are held at the end of the year. Evil spirits are chased away, animals are blessed, the Three Wise Men arrive, and much more.

Winters in Mallorca are mild

The winter in Mallorca is very mild. The low sun provides a wonderful light in the afternoons and evenings. At midday, you can wear a T-shirt under the sun. The island breathes and recovers from the intense summer sun.

The water reserves are filling up again, the island is green. And the blossoming of the almond trees begins at the end of January, in the middle of winter. It is truly a delightful spectacle of nature. If you have never seen the almond tree blossoming in Mallorca, you should do so as soon as possible.

Average winter temperatures in Mallorca

The average daytime temperatures in November are 18 degrees, dropping to 16 in December and to 15 in January and February. The water temperature is 20 degrees in November, 16 in December, and 14 in January and February.

Therefore, it’s not surprising that in November or December you can still see some people swimming at the beaches of Mallorca. Or even join them. At night, however, it can get very chilly. With an average temperature of 14 degrees, January is the coldest month.

And yes, it can snow in Mallorca too. In the Sierra de Tramontana, the snow sometimes lingers for a few days. There have been hikers who have had to be rescued by helicopter from a snowy cabin.

But that’s not the norm. However, it rains more often in the winter. Although a resident of a Nordic country might consider 5 rainy days a month with these temperatures as summer.
